What it does, in practice

The Pika is a scanner that fits in your pocket: it weighs 260 grams and measures around 100 × 60 × 35 mm, practically the dimensions of a slightly thick smartphone. That is not a cosmetic detail — it is the reason it is useful. “Serious” professional scanners are often bulky and live on a tripod; this one you pick up, walk around the object and you are done.

Under the shell works a dual-light system: seven parallel blue lasers plus near-infrared (NIR) structured light. Translated into practice, that means two working modes. In laser mode it reaches a stated accuracy of up to 0.03 mm, suitable for anyone who needs to reproduce precise geometries. Structured-light mode is handier for capturing organic shapes and large surfaces quickly, capturing up to 110 images per second. It has a 3-inch touchscreen on board and AI functions for aligning the scans, so you are not forced to always have a laptop attached.

Who really needs it (and who does not)

Here we come to the honest part, the one product pages usually skip. A scanner at €649 + VAT is not for everyone, and that is fine.

It makes a lot of sense if you do reverse engineering: you have a physical part and you need the CAD to recreate it, modify it or produce a spare. It makes sense if you work with shapes that are hard to model by hand — an ergonomic component, an anatomical part, a sculpted object. It makes sense for those doing restoration, prototyping, personalisation: you capture reality and build on it. And it makes sense in teaching, where showing students the complete cycle “real object → model → print” is worth more than a thousand slides.

That said, we want to be upfront about a couple of things, because it is right to know them beforehand. The Pika is a pocket-class scanner: it is surprising for its size and price, but it is not a laboratory metrology scanner. If you need dimensional certification for industrial quality control with inspection tolerances, that is another category of instrument (and of budget). And like all optical scanners, it struggles on very reflective or transparent surfaces: glossy glass, mirror-finish metal or a matte black object often need to be treated with a matting spray before scanning. That is not a flaw of the Pika, it is the physics of light — but better to say it than to discover it afterwards.

One last practical note: battery life is around 70 minutes per battery. There are two in the box, so in practice you work without worries for a good half day, but if you expect long sessions it is worth bearing in mind.
