FDM Technology — Filament 3D Printing

FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) printing is the most common additive manufacturing technology: it deposits material layer by layer from a plastic filament, creating solid parts ranging from early-stage prototypes to definitive functional components.

At Strato3D's lab in Monza, we work with FDM every day for our third-party productions. This means we know every material practically—not just on paper—and we know when FDM is the right choice and when it's better to look elsewhere.

When FDM printing makes sense

  • You need a prototype quickly to test form, dimensions, or assembly
  • You need to produce a small series of functional components without investing in tooling
  • You are looking for an out-of-production spare part or a custom part not found in catalogs
  • You need a jig, fixture, or tooling for an assembly line
  • You want a limited edition design or furnishing object

Materials we work with

  • PLA — easy, economical, good aesthetic finish. Ideal for prototypes, architectural models, objects that don't withstand intense loads.
  • PETG — decent chemical and mechanical resistance, prints well even with standard machines. For containers, lightweight functional parts, food-safe use with certified filaments.
  • ABS / ASA — resistance to heat and atmospheric agents. ASA specifically for outdoor applications or in direct sunlight.
  • TPU — flexible and elastomeric. For gaskets, shock absorbers, grips, anything that needs to yield and return to shape.
  • Nylon (PA12, PA-CF, PA-GF) — mechanical and thermal resistance, lightness. The carbon fiber or glass fiber reinforced version is significantly stiffer and suitable for industrial jigs.
  • Polycarbonate (PC) — withstands up to 110°C and absorbs impacts well. For enclosures, structural parts in hot environments or under stress.
  • CF / GF Composites — high strength-to-weight ratio. For lightweight structural applications where steel would be oversized.

How the service works

Send us the file (STL, STEP, 3MF) with your preferred material, quantity, and intended use. If you are unsure about the material, describe the application to us and we'll tell you what makes sense. Quote within 24 business hours, production generally from 48 hours to a few days depending on size.
