Thermochromic filaments contain pigments that change their shade as the temperature varies, creating a magical effect that is very popular in gadgets, educational toys, mugs and holders, cases and interactive promotional items. The colour change usually happens around 30-33 C: the heat of your hand or of lukewarm water is enough to shift the part, for example, from black to red or from purple to pink, and then back to the original colour once it cools down.
From a technical point of view the base is almost always PLA, so printing is simple and suitable even for beginners: extrusion temperatures between 190 and 215 C, bed at 50-60 C, cooling fan on. It is important not to exceed the recommended temperatures and to avoid long dwell times at high temperature in the nozzle, because excessive overheating can degrade the pigments. The effect is reversible and lasts for many cycles, but prolonged exposure to UV rays can reduce the pigment's sensitivity over time: for outdoor objects a protective coating is advisable.
